Despite the rise of electrical control in cars, many internal systems are still designed along traditional lines. For instance, the steering column connects the steering wheel at its upper end to the steering gear (rack and pinion) at its lower end. It generally consists of a column tube fixed to the car body, a steering shaft and a transmission shaft. The steering shaft is usually supported by two bearings at the top and bottom of the column.
